How to Read These Stories

Maybe you find it a little overwhelming, being faced with the raw reality of these stories. To be honest, I find it a little overwhelming to write them. What can we do with all this?

This post is dedicated to providing 5 key guidelines to keep in mind, so that we can read and respond to these stories well.

Number 1: Realize these things are not uncommon.

You might be shocked by some of the things you read in these stories (especially if you are from the average cloistered Christian circle that specializes in taboo subjects). If you’re shocked, it is probably because you think these events or circumstances are uniquely horrible or especially sinful. They are neither. Part of the purpose of this blog is to bring to light how common these difficult stories are. We think they are unusual because we don’t talk about them, but I can promise you that you probably know more than one person who has dealt with these very same types of issues, and through no sin of their own.

Number 2: Judge not.

Following that vein, read these stories from a place of humility. You've been given a great privilege to peer into these people's deepest hearts - you are but a guest. Instead of comparing your life to theirs or concerning yourself with the sins that lead to their situation, respond to these stories with respect and compassion rather than judgement.

Number 3: Pretend it's your best friend.

Imagine the person telling you their story was your best friend, your sister, your son. How would you react? Weep with them, embrace them, love them. Empathize. Imagine - truly reach deep into yourself and imagine what life would feel like in their shoes.

Number 4: Listen.

The best way to know what it's like to be them is to listen to what they are saying. They are already telling you what it's like. Don't make assumptions about how miserable they must be, just listen to what they are actually saying. Seek to understand their perspective instead of forming your own. There's no other way of broadening your view of the world!

Number 5: Know God better.

As you read these stories, be looking for the ways God has shown his great grace and redemption. Find and dwell on the hope in these stories. Seek to know God better and enjoy His greatness by learning what He is doing in the lives of others!

Hopefully these guidelines are helpful to you as you read. More importantly, I hope these same guidelines are helpful to your life in general as you interact face-to-face with family, friends, and strangers.
